As with all kids his age, Ryder is beyond infatuated with trains with many collections of Thomas the Train and other sets at home. Whenever we see one around town, everything stops to watch it lumber by. But its not everyday that you get to see one up close. Not to mention one that runs on steam!
I found Strasburg Railroad and arranged for a first class ride along their scenic route through the Amish countryside in Pennsylvania. What a fantastic experience for all of us. It was about a 45 minute train ride in a restored antique car with plush swiveling chairs and snack service. The train depot had fun shops and activities to explore and of course was heavily kid themed. Across the street was the finest railroad museum I have ever seen. It was a perfect activity about 2 hours from home and I can see us going again in the future when the weather would be more permissive of riding in the open air car.
