Thanksgiving 2020

In a year that most of us would rather just go away, we do still feel fortunate in many ways and have a lot to be thankful for. The usual large gathering at the Crawford’s farm in Germantown was canceled because of Covid so we re-arranged some plans for the smaller scale as well as increased scheduling flexibility.

In a normal year, Thanksgiving break is concluded with the mass hysteria of kicking off the Event Photo Group’s holiday season which consists of around 30 events held over 3 weekends. EPG has precisely zero events this year, so we might as well embrace it and change things up. So we decided to leave for one last RV trip on Friday before T-Day and have several nice autumn days to unwind in a campground which is becoming one of our favorites so far.

Henlopen State Park campground was still pretty full through the weekend however once the noon checkout time was passed, we found that campground was at around 20% capacity. So we felt like we had the place to ourselves. Sure, some of the temps were chilly, but it only reminded us of fall in Gunny and ultimately we still had a nice furnace to keep up warm and enough firewood to warm the night sky just enough to watch the stars overhead. We went on several great bike rides, frequent walks with the dogs and explored the area a little further than last time.

Joining us were Ari and Lucas who ave been shopping for a camper of their own. So on this voyage, Ari rented an RV similar to the one they just put a deposit on. It was nice having some friends in an adjoining site that we could visit with.

Our last night there (Wednesday) we had our RV Thanksgiving with turkey (mostly cooked at home before we left since the RV doesn’t have an oven) which we wrapped in foil and cooked in the open fire, mashed potatoes and gravy, canned cranberry (yep, the kind shaped like the can!) all all other accouterments that one would expect. It was a fun way to conclude the trip and I wouldn’t hesitate to cook a turkey breast that way again.

The next step for the RV is to winterize it for its nap until spring break when we hope to have another longer trip.
